Arizona D.O.T. website: Sasquatches/Yeti?/Bigfoot/Abominable Snowmen?

By Jack Brummet

"We might have spotted a family of sasquatches on SR 260 near Heber this afternoon. What do you think?" the Department of Transportation wrote in the caption of photos posted on their official Facebook, January 1st, 2015:

Associated Press: Sasquatch hair samples turn out to be from known animals

LONDON (AP) — "DNA testing is taking a bite out of the Bigfoot legend. After scientists analyzed more than 30 hair samples reportedly left behind by Bigfoot and similar mythical beasts like the Himalayan Yeti, they found all of them came from more mundane creatures like bears, wolves, cows and raccoons."
. . .
"In 2012, researchers at Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology issued an open call asking museums, scientists and Bigfoot aficionados to share any samples they thought were from the legendary ape-like creatures."
"I thought there was about a 5 percent chance of finding a sample from a Neanderthal or (a Yeti)," said Bryan Sykes of Oxford University, who led the research, the first peer-reviewed study of Bigfoot, Yeti and other "anomalous primates."
. . .
"Sykes and colleagues tested 36 hair samples from Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Russia and the U.S. using DNA sequencing and all of them matched DNA from known animals. Most were from bears, but there were also hairs from a Malaysian tapir, horses, porcupine, deer, sheep, and a human.
"While Sykes said they didn't find any proof of Bigfoot-related creatures, he acknowledged their paper doesn't prove they don't exist."

Don't mess with a Sasquatch/Bigfoot/Yeti/Abominable Snowman in Washington State

By Jack Brummet, Unexplained Phenomena Ed.
illustration  by Jack Brummet

In my home state, Washington, it is illegal to mess with a Sasquatch.  They're protected. As an interesting sidebar, the state only made sex with horses illegal after the notorious Enumclaw Horse Sex Incident (detailed in ATIT in eight posts, in excruciating detail).

Undiscovered Species Protection Act

Whereas, there is evidence to indicate the possible existence of an undiscovered species a primate mammal variously described as Bigfoot, Sasquatch, an ape-like creature or a subspecies of Homo Sapiens.

Whereas, reported recent and past sightings, research by anthropologist, Primatologist, biologist, forensic experts, cryptozooligst, independent organizations, private individuals and the famous chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall support this possibility.

Whereas, the absence of specific laws covering the slaying, taking, trapping or harassing of said specimens encourages laxity in the use of firearms and other deadly devices and poses a clear and present threat to the safety and well-being of persons living or traveling within the boundaries of the creatures habitat as well as to the creatures themselves.

Whereas, for the safety of all, the carrying or dispersing of firearms requires a sense of responsibility to all surrounding individuals and animals. It is the shooters full responsibility to correctly identify the species before the taking of aim and or the killing of a species, therefore ignorance will not absolve the shooter of said charges.

Whereas, be it resolved that any premeditated, willful and wanton slaying harassing or any malicious activities upon such creature shall be deemed a felony punishable by a fine not to exceed One hundred Thousand Dollars ($100.0000) and/or imprisonment, not to exceed ten (10) years.

Whereas, in the event of the slaying or capture of said creature any and all (moneys) proceeds and revenues shall be donated to a state college for future studies and or the protection of said creatures. The rights and physical possession to the said creature shall also be immediately donated to a state college, for further studies.

U.S. and Nepalese regulations on Sasquatch hunts

By Jack Brummet, Unexplained Phenomena Ed.

In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed Everest, and reported seeing large tracks. In 1954, the Daily Mail (UK) funded a sixteen-week “Snowman Expedition” to Everest to look for clues.   The mid-fifties were when the search for the Abominable Snowman a/k/a Bigfoot a/k/a Sasquatch a/k/a Yeti cranked up to a fever pitch.

Enough Yeti expeditions were launched that the Nepalese and U.S. Governments issued a set of regulations for Bigfoot hunters and researchers.  “Regulations Governing Mountain Climbing Expeditions in Nepal—Relating to Yeti,” was issued from the American Embassy in Kathmandu on November 30, 1959.

And, in Bigfoot news. . .

By Jack Brummet, Unexplained Phenomena Ed.

In the northwest, we always hope that one of our proximate Sasquatch will be honored, rather than some Commie Yeti.  But, scientists and Bigfoot watchers believe there may now be solid evidence that Yetis exist in the Siberian tundra, reports the Guardian.
A dozen-plus experts from around the world have declared that they are 95% certain of the animal’s existence at a daylong conference in the town of Tashtagol in the Kemerovo region. In recent years, locals there have reported numerous sightings of the--using our favorite name-- abominable snowman.
The Kemerovo government announced on Oct. 10 that a two-day expedition in October, to the region’s Azassky cave and Karatag peak “collected irrefutable evidence” of yetis’ existence on the wintry plateau.
“Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the ‘snow man’ on Kemerovo region territory,” read their statement. “In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti.”   The group also discovered footprints, a presumed bed and various other pieces of evidence. .
The scientific community has always disputed the existence of the yeti (a/k/a Bigfoot a/k/a Sasquatch a/k/a abominable snowman) because of the lack of any conclusive or hard physical evidence. However, hundreds of sightings of Yetis have been reported in Himalayan countries and in North America, where it is known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot.

Help Wanted: Sasquatch Hunter

By Jack Brummet,
Paranormal & Unexplained Phenomena Editor

The All Over Albany website has has alerted the Internet to a job opening on Craigslist — for a primate-lover with an open mind and a (preferably) four-wheel-drive vehicle.  And, BT Dubs, s/he will tracking down Sasquatches (a/k/a Bigfoot, Yeti, Abominable Snowman).

The Craigslist post, seeks a research assistant: "Not for profit organization, located in Whitehall, NY is a high-energy, team-oriented research entity that is involved in the tracking, documenting, and study of cryptozoological creatures, with a deep interest in the study and search of bipedal primitive apes. We seek an experienced researcher with a deep understanding of cryptozoology, primatology, with a good background with scientific research and interest in great apes."

Some of the researcher's duties are to "investigate, document and interview individuals with reported Bigfoot sitings [sic].    The right person for the job must be ready for "occasional travel to remote areas of Adirondacks including spending several nights in the wilderness, checking motion cameras, collecting hair and dung samples for laboratory analysis amongst other related activities."

MSNBC recently noted that "though there is no objective scientific evidence supporting the idea that Bigfoot is real, more than a quarter of Americans believe that the woodland ape either definitely or probably exists."

The most insane Sasquatch story ever--Dennis Daryl's "Living in the heart of bigfoot country"

The author of this story sent it to Bigfoot Encounters, another Blogspot blog.  It is a rambling, shaggy and improbable tale. It would be great, even if only 10% of it happened.   Dennis Daryl, naturally, claims it is "100% truth."   It's hard to tell if he is pulling our collective leg with a pretty epic troll, or if actually believes all this happened to him.  In any case, if you have a taste for this sort of thing (and I do), it is a fascinating train-wreck.

44 years ago today, a Yakima man took the best known picture of a Sasquatch a/k/a Bigfoot a/k/a Yeti a/k/a Abominable Snowman

By Jack Brummet, Unexplained Phenomena Editor

44 years ago today, a Yakima, Wash. resident, Roger Patterson, shot a 16 mm film near Bluff Creek in California from which came the most famous image of a Bigfoot ever taken.  You see it everywhere (I remember in The Dark Knight, the photo was pinned to the wall as one of The Batman suspects).  You can find information on this famous sighting and film on Wikipedia. . .
