The Trump Presidential Transition Team

By Jack Brummet, National Affairs Ed.

We have not heard much from Governor Chris Christie and the transition team of late.

Chris Christie's winter of regret

By Jack Brummet, National Affairs Ed.

This quote is from a Chicago Tribune commentary yesterday on Chris Christie. They describe him standing behind Trump at his Tuesday victory speech:

"He had the face of a man who has used his third wish and realized too late that 'may my family never starve' could be twisted to mean that the genie should murder his entire family."

Ex-Governor Mike Huckabee and Governor Chris Christie relegated to the kid's table; Pataki and Gilmore, out

By Jack Brummet, 2016 primary and caucus ed.

Ex-Governor Mike Huckabee and Governor Chris Christie didn't poll well enough to stay on the main stage and are now relegated to the kid's table at the 4th Republican debate next Tuesday. They both failed to come up with the 2.5% share in the polls.

On November 10th, Huck and The Governor will be standing with Gov. Bobby Jindal. and Sen. Lindsey Graham.  Ex-Gov. George Pataki and Jim Gilmore didn't even pull enough points this time to be at the kid's table.

Governor Chris Christie offers to resign?

By Pablo Fanque, National Affairs Ed.

Governor Chris Christie offers to resign?  That's how I read the statement he made last Thursday:
"My promise to the people of the state is that if there’s any other evidence that comes forward that requires action to be taken, I will take it, no matter how much it hurts me personally or dismays me because this is the job I asked for and I’ve got to do it."
The Governor seems to be saying that if that "smoking traffic cone" does turn up that he will punish himself by resigning, since he instantly terminated two top aides when evidence of their complicity was released.

You have to guess that over the last week the shredders were grinding, magnets and hard disk tools were doing their thing, and that anyone even remotely related to the Governor's office has scrubbed, hidden, erased, and burned any even remotely troubling memo, voicemail, email, tweet, text message, and Facebook post.  But as we've all learned over the years, you can never find everything. . .and all it takes is one.

Chris Christie praises himself in apology

By Pablo Fanque, National Affairs Ed.

In his 108 minute "apology" Thursday, Governor Chris Christie never really apologized.  He did, actually, but not for anything he did. “I’m telling you: I had nothing to do with this.” As David Letterman said, he "boldly took responsibility by blaming everyone but himself."   And then he told us about himself:

  • “I’m a very loyal guy.”
  • “I am not a focus-group-tested, blow-dried candidate.”
  • “I’ve worked for the last 12 years in public life developing a reputation for honesty.”
  • “I’ve engendered the sense and feeling among the people closest to me that we’re a family.”
  • “I’m a person who cares deeply about doing my job well.”
  • “I’m incredibly loyal to my people.”
  • “I was the class president and athlete.”

President Obama heads back to the Jersey shore

By Pablo Fanque, National Affairs Ed.

BHO returns to Jersey to relive his FEMA success during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  And maybe pick up some Q ratings from his propinquity to the diminishing Governor.

"For Obama, the tour helps him continue redirecting the political conversation after two weeks of dealing with the fallout over the administration's response to terror attacks last September in Benghazi, Libya, the targeting of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department's review of journalist phone records as part of a leak investigation." - CBS News

Governor Chris Christie's keynote address

By Pablo Fanque, National Affairs Editor

Chris Christie's speech reminded me of Obama's 2004. . .he also spent a lot of time talking about himself (and earlier so did Bill Clinton in his famous and long keynote many years ago). The best part is that Christie only mentioned Romney seven times, all mostly in the last eight minutes of the speech. It's interesting the way they are focused more on the platform and getting BHO out than on their actual candidate, who even the GOP-Tea Party treat like a cardboard cutout or placeholder candidate.

The return of Governor Chris Christie (he actually never left)

By Pablo Fanque, National Affairs Editor

The Drudge Report reported today that President Barack Obama told a top fundraiser that Romney wants to choose Gen. David Petraeus for the vice presidential slot.  That would be interesting.  But it also appeared in The Drudge Report, so the veracity of that rumor is immediately called into question.

Politico today reported that  Tim PawlentyRob PortmanMarco RubioKelly AyotteBob McDonnell, Paul Ryan and Bobby Jindal were out of the running, since they have all been assigned speaking slots at the Republican convention in three weeks.    I still think that Rubio and Ryan are in it, but I have nothing rational or factual to back that up.  Jeb Bush must have bigger plans for 2016 (assuming Romney survives his income tax problems and remains on the ticket).  The Condoleezza Rice VP-ship was always just a GOP opium pipe-dream.

What's also interesting is that, after being more or less out of the running the last couple of months, Chris Christie is either being considered as a possible VP, or his name is being conspicuously tossed around just to keep things interesting (anything to get people to quit talking about Mitt Romney's taxes, and his disastrous European Leadership Tour).  His loud, brash, blunt style would be an interesting, and most likely extremely-awkward, adjunct to Mitt Romney's near-total absence of charisma, charm, and, as we have seen the last few months, political intelligence, and a crippling inability to connect on any sort of retail level with the voters.  Christie on the ticket wouldn't be an actual personality transplant for Ex-Governor Romney, but it might not hurt.

No one is voting for Mitt Romney; they're voting against The President.  Mitt's big dilemma now is to figure out how to make people like him.  And that, friendos, is a Sysiphean rock to push up the hill.

Breaking news: Chris Christie says "no thanks"

By Mona Goldwater, New Jersey Editor

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey once again announced Tuesday that he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination, saying that while he thought seriously about entering the presidential race, "now is not my time."  The Governor said he decided Monday night and told his family and aides this morning.  He said he went to the bed last night "knowing exactly what I wanted to do" for the first time in weeks.

Christie told reporters that he "felt an obligation to earnestly consider" the appeals made by various prominent republicans, up to and including former President George H.W. Bush, and former first lady Nancy Reagan.  Christie closed by saying he wouldn't rule out a run in the future.

"Highly placed aides" to Chris Christie say he is considering White House run

By Pablo Fanque, Election 2012 Editor

After saying over and over and over that he would not make a run for the White House, sources close to Jersey Gov. Chris Christie say he is reconsidering his decision to stay out of the 2012 contest.

Staffers say that he is expected to decide soon. He has no choice; if he is running, he needs to start organizing the field for upcoming primaries and caucuses. There are filing deadlines coming up soon in the early primary states.

You may remember he has denied wanting to run all along. Just a year ago he said that "short of suicide" he wasn't sure what he could say to convince people that he's not running. With half the Republican party begging him to run, it has to be very hard to walk away from what is surely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
