Del Brummet on Mt. Si

Del and Keelin took a hike on Mt. Si yesterday.   This is Del, near the top.  Mt. Si is what remains of a volcano.  According to The Wikipedia, "The 4-mile (6.4 km) long Mount Si trail climbs a total of 3,500 feet (1,100 m) reach to the summit ridge. The summit of Mount Si can then be reached by an exposed scramble, class 3, up the summit block which is known as the "Haystack"

Del Brummet takes photographs in far far outer space

(Seattle, WA) By Jack Brummet
Paranormal & Celestial Phenomena Editor, All This Is That

My son Del is taking photos in far far outer space.   No, it's not on The Hubble...you have to have some pretty serious juice just to get thirty seconds on that baby.  But, he is using the network of ground-based NASA/Harvard telescopes--a/k/a/ "micro-observatories" --that you control remotely from a computer. [Ed's note:  "Far far"  as opposed to near outer space, which you and I could reach in an hour driving the speed limit, if we could drive straight up.]

Here are some of the images he's shot and received back from NASA.  Cick the photos to enlarge.  These are images of the Whirpool Galaxy, Saturn, The Andromeda Galaxy, (you know this one) The Moon, and The Rng Nebula,

Del Brummet short "Unplugged" appears in another festival

A film by Del Brummet and two other youth is now appearing in a Korean film festival. The film has already snagged numerous awards and has appeared in several film festivals.

"Unplugged, a short film by Ballard High School video production students Diana Federighi ('08), Kaelan Gilman ('10) & Del Brummet ('10), was recently named an Official Selection by the 11th Annual Seoul International Youth Film Festival. SIYFF is one of the largest and most prestigious youth film festivals in Asia. The event spans the week of July 9 - 15 and includes an international youth filmmaking camp. This year, 821 films were submitted from 44 different countries. Only 36 films were selected for the festival through a highly competitive process. For more information, visit the festival website. "
Unplugged is the story of a teen whose connection to music deepens after the loss of his iPod. The short had not originally been entered in SIYFF, but the festival committee saw the film on the Images of Youth Video Festival website and then contacted Ballard High School to request that the short be submitted. Unplugged had won awards for Special Recognition for Overall Excellence in Media and Peer Achievement from the Images of Youth Video Festival in 2008. Unplugged was also named an Official Selection of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth this year.

New Demos by Del Brummet on MySpace (with lyrics here)

Click on the Isla Nublars to enlarge...

Del Brummet a/k/a The Isla Nublars has three new song demos on MySpace:

Earth
The Meteor
Ranger

I'd also recommend my favorite tune by the Nublars so far: Planet Of Ice. They're all here, on his MySpace page.

Earth

Lyrics and Music Copyright © 2008 by Del Brummet/Isla Nublars

You taught us to think, you taught us to give.
You showed us how to love, and how to live.
But now we have forsaken you,
Left you to wither like a mangy old shoe. Oo-oo-oo

We’re calling from Alpha Centauri
And we’ve got a lot to say.
We are sorry we abandoned you, and we will come back to you some day.

Mother Earth we watched in sorrow as your eco system died, we knew with all our heart that in us the blame did lie.

But we ran away to Alpha Centauri,
We didn’t look back, and now were sorry.- ooo ooo ooo

We’re calling from Alpha Centauri
And we’ve got a lot to say.
We are sorry we abandoned you, and we will come back to you someday.

The wonders of Alpha Centauri were nothing up to you, we miss you like a bare foot man, will eventually miss his shoes.
We miss the trees, the fish the forest the lakes and the sun. We hope with all our hearts that we can repair what we’ve done.

We’re coming to you now, on our big space ship, a city of us, a city ready to live.
We hope you are the same, we hope you will forgive.
–ooo—ooo—ooo

We are coming to you Earth
And were coming today.
We hope you will take it in your heart to let us stay!

Entering the atmosphere, with everyone in tears.

The Earth below is a changed place, and it looks to be our fears.

But we can save you, we will put you back together,
We will cure you, even if it takes forever.
Ooo-ooo-ooo

Earth we have come back to you and your not a pretty sight.
It is all of our faults, and we hope to shed some light.

But we can save you, we will put you back together,
We will cure you, even if it takes forever.
Ooo-ooo-ooo

But we can save you, we will put you back together,
We will cure you, even if it takes forever.

The Ranger
Music and Lyrics Copyright © 2008 by Del Brummet/Isla Nublars

Oh! I think I love this one king, who I have never known.
He’s braver than the bravest man, and I have seen him in war he PWNS!

He would sacrifice himself if it meant the people could live in peace.
He would wield the sword once broken, if it meant that evil would cease.

He was called the ranger, and he fought with heart pure an true.
He wandered the world by horse, and in his heart he knew.

He would sacrifice him self if it meant the people could live in peace.
He would wield the sword once broken, if it meant that evil would cease.

He strode into the mountain of the dead and told them what was what.
With them he went to Gondor, and every orc they say he cut.

For his sword was sharp and his hearts so true, as he dug a path for the people anew.
He held his blood streaked sword to the sky and yelled “Frodo this is for you!”

ooooooo oo o ooooo

For his sword was sharp and his heart so true, as he yelled “Frodo this for you”
And the soldiers were fighting as they cheered frodo on, they said, “Give Sauron the old 1-2”

Oh! I think I love this one king, whose name is known to all.
Aragorn the ranger king, who they say would never fall.

The Meteor
Music and lyrics by Copyright © 2008 by Del Brummet/Isla Nublars

Can you see what I can see right now?
People dancing all around, they are eating apples all day.

It’s a future that I do see. How to attain it is a mystery.
But Ill laugh anyway, in December and in May.
OH YES ILL laugh all day, in the future and today!

Because keeping on the bright side is all we have, when science is incapable and religion is a sham.

Do you hope what I do hope right now?

That the world is not hopeless, And that Dark could never be endless.

It's a future that some do see. How it will come is a mystery.
But Ill laugh anyway, in December and in May.
OH YES ILL laugh all day, in the future and today!

Because keeping on the bright side is all we have, when science is incapable and religion is a sham.
Can you see what I do see right now?
A meteor approaches with a gleam in its eye, all will die all will die.
As the meteor approaches, I think a strange thought, that as the human race ends
Another race willll noooooooot!
Will we be in museums, will they study our bones?
Will the squids be the ones to see the sun explode?
But Ill laugh anyway, as the meteor ends our days

OH YES ILL laugh all the way, into the abyss and the last light ray.
Because keeping on the bright side is all we have, when the world’s about to explode from beneath us and our lives aren’t worth a damn.
So as the meteor approaches, I do one last thing.
I laugh to the sun and then I sing:

The meteor makes the humans no more. Were about to become extinct, like the dinosaur.
After all we have done, every thought we have thought, we can all calm down and laugh a good lot.
Screamin' through the street in the middle of the night, the people are so alone and full of fright. Their lives are about to end from a gleam in the sky, all will die, all will die.

Del Brummet's latest songs: Planet of Ice and Golden Nights

del brummet four years ago

Del Brummet under his nom de plume Isla Nubars, has posted his latest songs, The Planet of Ice and Golden Nights. Click here to here to listen. Planet of Ice is my favorite Brummet song since Evolution (which you can find in the same place). Del took music lessons from Milo Petersen for a long time but never made much progress. Milo--a longtime Seattle jazz stalwart, and my friend since I was two years old--was an amazingly inspirational and patient teacher. But it just never clicked. . .until a couple years later. All of a sudden it all clicked and Del began seriously woodshedding. He taught himself chords, and song structure, and started writing songs. It is always stunning what youth can do and learn with music and languages. Do I sound like a proud poppa? Well, I am.

I feel a little guilty for having been an influence in Del's upbringing. . .and the fact a few of his songs focus on aliens, religion, and other twisted obsessions of mine. But he has clearly taken what he needed from the father, and left the rest (callback from The Band: "you take what you need and leave the rest").

Guitars, percussion, vocals, and vocal overdubs by Delaney Curran Brummet.

Lyrics (and chords) to Planet of Ice:

C-Em-F-G

D
A 0 2 3
E 3
Crash-landed on a planet of ice.
We made a mistake, so we’ll pay the price.
Odds are that we are here to stay.
So we might as well make the best of each day.
[Chorus]
Am-G-E-D (AM)
WE ARE STRANDED AND WE KNOW IT!
BUT WE WILL NEVER SHOW IT!
THOUGH OUR TEMPERATURES ARE LOW, OUR MORALE IS HIGH!
WHY NOT BE REALLY HAPPY AS WE DIE?
Today we discovered a cave nearby.
We danced around and then stepped inside.
A monster lived there, his fur so long.
That he let us curl up with him while he sang a song.
[Song]
Am-G-E-D
LA LA LA LA LA LA L LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA
With our homes far away and our space ship dead.
We sang and lived on this planet instead.
The monster taught us how to sing his song.
We taught the monster how to belong.
[Chorus]

[Here lead guitar comes in]
[Repeat chords for verse]
[song]

Lyrics to Golden Nights:

THE ISLA NUBLARS
ABDUCTED!
GOLDEN NIGHTS
Capo down 6
AM-C-(G-D-C-G)2
IiIIiIIIiIii Want to sail away in the sky, want to live in golden nights.

[Awesome]
Bb C D
Nooo frights no wooories
Bb C D
Noo plights no hurries
F Em
On a planet where light
Em A
is always shining

G-D-C-G)2
[Pre-Chorus] I want to sail away in to the sky, [Chorus] I want to live in golden nights.

Hills of old filled with memories untold, would green upon my coming there.
Apple trees would daily provide, all the while it warm out side. BECAUSE [Chorus]

AM-C-(G-D-C-G)
And iiii Would live a lie, if the price was forever golden skies. Id blast away to a place that never dies.
[Awesome] [Chorus]

I could live without the religions of the world; they shouldn't be the reason for your good
And to all the people who live life through their windshield, drop your keys, and pick up a guitar. BECAUSE I WANT TO LIVE WITH ALL OF YOU IN THE STARS!

[Awesome] [Chorus]

Del Brummet's Evolution

Del Brummet and The Isla Nublars have released a new song, Evolution, a funny (and maybe just a little sad) song about a bird wistfully thinking back on his dinosaur ancestors and how they ruled the earth and did just what they wanted. Click here to hear the song.

A history of Dino rock icons The Isla Nublars (from their MySpace site):

"After starting out in their parent's basement in Seattle, The Isla Nublars found themselves at the top of the the Dino rock scene in 2007 with their debut album, Abducted!. The band's latest album, Delicious, fuses Del Brummet's introspective lyrics with jangling guitars to somehow pump out a bevy of chart-topping gems. With standout tracks like "Space The Infinite Frontier," already certified platinum in Europe, The Isla Nublars can count on loads of future success. "
